Two Questions for Veterans

Oh, we veterans are the pride of our country. We stand tall, face our flag as the anthem sounds, place our hands over our hearts, feel that feeling. You know, you know the feeling, your eyes wet-up, and sometimes a little tear happens. We know, we know we all did our part. We served our country when our country needed us. We did good.  The music stops. Well now, we can all enjoy the occasion of the day. Many times, many times we experience this, if we are fortunate enough to still be alive, after we did our part. Of course, we are, we are the fortunate ones, the fortunate ones that know that we did our part. "Oh", pay no attention to all that, all that, just may be this old veteran’s feelings.  Anyway, first question. There was a time, before we did our part, there was a time that most of us stood tall, faced our flag, promised our allegiance to our country, by oath or affirmation, we promised to support The Constitution of The United States of America.  "Anyway", first question, were we serious?

Second question, when did we relinguish that promise?
